22.02Azer Hudiyev: The Munich debate: a comparison of two political schools

Traditionally, the annual Munich Security Conference brings together heads of states, ministers of defense and foreign affairs, representatives of business and international organizations from many countries around the world. This year, from 14 to 16 February, the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich hosted conference participants from more than 40 countries. The most important issues of the world's political agenda were discussed. The conference participants tried to find answers to current geopolitical, economic, political, military issues and problems related to establishing of a new global security system. In various contexts, the speakers noted the danger of increased turbulence in world geopolitics, non-compliance with international law in interstate relations, and unresolved regional conflicts.

Geopolitical and geoeconomic systems are facing the process of complicating and increasing risks, which are often in harmony with new threats and challenges of the modern world. This process has a temporal character, that is, each region has its own rhythm of transformation. There are regions that are, figuratively speaking, in a “border state” - between potential destabilization and more dynamic regional cooperation. Regions of this type are usually very sensitive to all sorts of risks and can be explosive in geopolitical and geoeconomic terms. In our opinion, the current Black Sea basin is one of such regions. For it, minimizing of current risks is vital.

According to the common opinion of scientists and politicians, in the transformation of the modern world order, the regional factor in the political, cultural, geopolitical and economic contexts is considered an essential instrument influencing the formation of the global security system. The logic of transition from safe and stable regions to a safe and stable world requires an appropriate foreign policy from regional players. In this context, Azerbaijan's foreign policy stands out for its predictability, openness and constructiveness.
